India, Sri Lanka begin joint naval exercises

In a bid to strengthen Indo-Sri Lankan defence cooperation, warships and navy personnel of the two countries have begun a joint sea exercise off the western coast, to train Lankan cadets on-board Indian warships."As many as 95 Sri Lankan officers under Trainees and 141 Indian officers under Trainees, cadets and midshipman participated in the exercises," Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson Commander D K P Dasanayake said. The exercises and training would continue till Thursday.

In a major operation, the Indian Navy intercepted a pirate mother ship, rescuing 13 crew members, and arrested 61 Somali sea brigands nearly 600 nautical miles off the western coast. "Vega 5, a pirate mother vessel, was intercepted by fast attack craft INS Kalpeni and 61 pirates were apprehended and 13 crew members rescued," a Navy spokesperson said on Monday. The pirates and their ship were being brought to Mumbai for further investigations, the spokesperson said.

The move is aimed at securing coal supply to its proposed 1,500 mega watt plant in the western coast. The company is looking for locations in Maharashtra and Gujarat for the plant. The infrastructure firm has paid half of the acquisition amount upfront and the balance will be paid after commercial production begins two years from now. Coal from the mine would be shipped to the new plant during the time of power generation.
